History of the Cours d'Adultes de Paris

Ville de Paris
During the French Revolution, Talleyrand, inspired by Condorcet among others, directed a report on public education, which he presented to the Constituent Assembly on September 10, 11 and 19, 1791, extolling for the first time the benefits of adult education (in a country still largely illiterate). However, it wasn't until 1820 that the "Société pour l'instruction élémentaire" (Society for Elementary Instruction) was created, establishing the first adult education courses in Paris, including one for women.
In 1833, François Guizot, Minister of Public Instruction, passed a law on primary education, encouraging every commune to have an adult education center, in partnership with the rectors of the Académie. By 1837, 117,000 students were attending classes throughout France.
1872 saw the creation of the first municipal apprentice school on boulevard de La Villette, now the Lycée Diderot.

By the end of the 19th century, the vocational orientation of the Cours d'Adultes de la Ville de Paris was clear.
Industrialization marked a shift in the focus of these courses towards more technical instruction, to give workers the intellectual means to use machines.
After the First World War, the number of adult education courses declined throughout France, in Paris from 17,000 in 1895 to 5,000 between 1920 and 1935.
In 1939, growing fears of war prompted the public authorities to develop training, and a decree authorized the French Ministry of Education to create vocational training centers. The "centers de reclassement" became "centers de formations professionnelles accélérées" (accelerated vocational training centers); vocational training was born.

Since theFifth Republic, Paris has perpetuated the historical legacy of adult education. The municipal evening classes are adapting to the many demands of the job market, and are undergoing a gradual reorganization, the main aim of which is to keep pace with economic and social developments, to enable students to better adapt to the job market.
The only constraint is the one set by each auditor, who is keen to perfect his or her knowledge so as to become individually more fulfilled in his or her daily professional and personal life.
